The third patient, presented by Prof. Carlson, is a male, retired 70-year-old who experiences nocturia three to four times per night. His history of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) also includes frequency, urgency, weak stream and incomplete emptying. He suffers from atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and hypertension and takes antihypertensive medication. Prof. Carlson reviews adverse effects of desmopressin orally disintegrating tablets (ODT). Desmopressin ODT is well tolerated in adult nocturia patients and can be considered as therapy when conservative measures, such as lifestyle changes, fail. Physicians should, however, take into account the patient’s age, gender, concomitant benign prostatic hyperplasia and comorbidities when prescribing desmopressin.
