The real-life burden of disrupted sleep in nocturia patients

2018-08-17

Nocturia is the most common cause of sleep fragmentation and, in particular, associated with the disruption of deep sleep. Sleep expert Prof. Bliwise presents evidence that a shorter duration of the first uninterrupted sleep period (FUSP) has a wide-ranging negative impact on both physical and mental health as well as health-related quality of life. Thus, nocturia results in work productivity loss and activity impairment. In elderly patients, it is also a strong predictor of fall-related fractures and mortality. It has been shown that increases in FUSP are associated with improvements in most measurements of disturbed sleep. Therefore, treatment of nocturia may also increase the length and quality of sleep.
